Vince had the greatest 'comping skills behind a horn or singer ! His 1958 session with Getz & Tjader swings like mad as does the 1960 session w/ the Conte Candoli All-Stars: "Little Band, Big Jazz", a rather obscure (yet beautifully recorded) album which perfectly captures its era in sound as few others can. She sounds like a gem, and her warm reminiscences about Vince and what he was like to work with are golden, and add a dimension that will *have* to be added to the eventual second edition of the biography. :-)

The most delightfully frustrating part is the unreleased recording of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind", which would be the ONLY recorded vocal performance of that song featuring Vince himself! That would have made a monstrously interesting bonus track on, for example, Fantasy/Concord's remastered "Black Orpheus" disc a couple years back.

Did you happen to ask her if she could recall which set of lyrics she sang -- the Carel Werber lyrics, or Vince's original set (forgotten until they were recently unearthed in the original deposit filed with the U.S. Copyright office)? Given that it sounds like it was nearly contemporaneous with the Mel Torme recording, I presume it was the former, just as he used. But that would be doubly amazing Ms. Jamerson had recorded a version with Vince's own lyrics.Doug Andersonnoreply@blogger.com
