Thanks for writing...Goodness, what a great comment! Thanks for writing in, and thanks also for the kind words. Is your mother still alive? If so, I'd love to get in touch, and hear whatever she can recall about seeing Guaraldi. If not, do you have any mementos from that period? Photographs? With respect to Vince and Earthquake McGoon's, there's no indication that he ever was a billed act there, according to my detailed Guaraldi timeline. (Check it out at http://fivecentsplease.org/dpb/VinceGuaralditimeline.html) But he did visit on occasion, as recalled by jazz chanteuse Pat Yankee, who performed there; I was able to chat with her back in 2015, and you can read her recollections in this blog's 3/14/15 post, titled "Yankee Songbird." Please feel free to email me; my address is toward the bottom of the right-hand column stuff, under "Contact the Author."Derrick Banghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12885694730612878577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051519380220252201.post-20428446289873530792024-03-07T13:28:14.252-08:002024-03-07T13:28:14.252-08:00Turk Murphy jamming with Vince Guaraldi?!? The mer...Turk Murphy jamming with Vince Guaraldi?!? The mere idea...I think I just died and went to heaven. I would give most everything I own to see this. My late mother was an old friend of Turk's--an ex-girlfriend, actually, who just adored him even though they didn't end up together, and stayed friends. We used to go see him and his band at Earthquake McGoon's regularly when I was a kid. Other regulars taught me how to do the Charleston at the age of 8, and he was the kindest man. Vince was another of my jazz-loving Mom's favorites--she used to see him regularly back in the 1960s. We all loved his music--my parents had a huge record collection, and we always watched the Peanuts specials as much for his music as for Snoopy and Charlie Brown. Mom probably wasn't at Stern Grove that day because my parents were living in Missouri in 1966, but it would've made her so happy! I personally never got to see Turk step outside the traditional/New Orleans jazz style, but he was a consummate musician, so I'm not surprised he could do anything well. I just love the idea of him and Vince jamming so, so much, I can't even tell you. I wonder if Vince ever spent an evening at McGoons? It was such an incredibly fun place. I miss it, I miss those days, and I miss both those guys. Thanks for your fascinating blog!Lisa Greene Bakernoreply@blogger.com
