Singers always "...Intriguing comparisons, Bob. Singers always "make a song their own," but usually only by dropping or adding a single-syllable word here or there, to make the melody "scan" better. Folks were much more liberal with the changes they made to this song; these are two significantly different versions (and, as you correctly point out, there are others, as well).

The deposit included with the fourth (January 2, 1963) copyright on this song, which incorporates Carel Werber's lyrics, is simply the four-page sheet music single released to coincide with Steve Alaimo's cover of the song ("Recorded by Steve Alaimo on ABC-Paramount Records"). We therefore can assume that these are the lyrics as Werber wrote them ... and while they're close to River's version, they're nonetheless slightly different yet again. I'm particularly drawn to the total change of sentiment in the second line of the second verse (WON'T sail upwind on memories), which completely changes the sentiment expressed!

I'm including the first/second person options, as printed in the sheet music.

Here you go:

A month of nights, a year of days,
Octobers drifting into Mays.
I/You set my/your sail when the tide comes in
And I/you just cast my/your fate to the wind.

I/You shift my/your course along the breeze
Won't sail upwind on memories.
The empty sky is my/your best friend
And I/you just cast my/your fate to the wind.

That time has such a way of changing a man throughout the years.
And now I'm/you're rearranging my/your life thru all my/your tears
Alone ... alone.

There never was, there couldn't be
A place in time for men like me/to be
Who'd drink the dark and laugh at day
And let their wildest dreams blow away.

So now I'm/you're old ... Of course that's *only* a hunch, but one suggested by the Marcellino/Car Mar Music connection.Duggadugdugnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051519380220252201.post-33538068089083332812012-09-30T07:01:44.038-07:002012-09-30T07:01:44.038-07:00More insight? Research and analysis continue behind the scenes, and — as soon as new information and be verified — will be publicized here. But please be patient; all such investigation takes time (particularly now that you've encouraged me to more closely examine Vince's various known recordings of "Fate," and compare them to We Five and June Christy!).Derrick Banghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12885694730612878577noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051519380220252201.post-86299355051330187822012-09-29T09:09:39.102-07:002012-09-29T09:09:39.102-07:00Thanks for the insight into "Cast Your Fate T...Thanks for the insight into "Cast Your Fate To The Wind." A few questions, please.

There's a bridge with lyrics ("...Time has such a way of changing...") which occurs at the 49 second mark in both We Five's and June Christy's vocal (Werber) version of "Cast Your Fate To The Wind." Mel Torme's (earlier) version doesn't include it, nor does Shelby Flint's, Steve Alaimo's, and others.

Are both versions attributed to copyright four? Did Vince write the music for the bridge in the (full version of the) Carel Werber vocal copyright, or was this part of an arrangement? Had the bridge section appeared before in Vince's writing or performance -- in copyright, live, or elsewhere?

More insight requested; thanks again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051519380220252201.post-90675352795421326502012-09-26T22:45:22.431-07:002012-09-26T22:45:22.431-07:00That's mind-blowing to learn that Vince wrote ...That's mind-blowing to learn that Vince wrote his own set of lyrics for "Fate". Looking at Carel Werber's story that you posted a while back, she said that she wrote her lyrics on Guaraldi's suggestion that it needed words. So, did he forget that he'd already written lyrics for it, did he think his lyrics weren't very good, or did he not want Frank Werber to know about the earlier copyright? And it's interesting that Guaraldi and Werber use a similar structure, ending verses with the line "cast your/my fate to the wind" and resorting to mostly near-rhymes for "wind". Guaraldi's words aren't as polished, but they're more down-to-earth.Chris Leehttp://www.twitter.com/chreugleenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4051519380220252201.post-74104119938784004562012-09-26T07:47:46.163-07:002012-09-26T07:47:46.163-07:00Great post on a fascinating piece of musical detec...Great post on a fascinating piece of musical detective work. Those original Guaraldi lyrics are a really cool find.

The 1962 Copyright sounds pretty standard -- it just covers that particular piano arrangement of the underlying work/song. And the "work made for hire" status just means that the copyright is claimed by Guaraldi/Friendship, rather than whomever it was they hired to do that particular bit of arranging.

But the apparent 1961 re-registration is harder to figure. Even if the new bass and guitar lines were sufficient "new material" to justify a separate registration, it still should have referenced the original 1960 registration. I expect that you're right -- the parties that registered "Fate" in 1961 probably didn't know about (or chose to ignore) the earlier, 1960 registration. (While I initially wondered whether the oversight might have been deliberate, in order to secure ownership claims that otherwise would have belonged to Guaraldi alone, you helpfully note that the registration preceded Fate's hit status by nearly a year; so at the time it was registered, no one had any reason to expect that it would become so big.)

Keep it up, Derrick! I don't know how big your blog readership is, but we committed fans are certainly appreciative!Duggadugdugnoreply@blogger.com
